Boys have been arriving through the night, some walking for days in heat and brush to reach the King’s compound for the annual ‘Mbora Trials’, the most prestigious rite of passage in the land. For centuries, at least one male in each generation has been sent to compete as matter of family pride; however, this year the vast numbers who have entered the trials is unprecedented, and no one is sure why.
